Summer days
It has been a good while since I've posted anything but photos, so I thought I'd do a little writing. This has been a good (and busy) summer thus far. In June, Aaron, Ceci, and I traveled to Cincy and Kinsman, and Ceci stayed with Nora and Jerry for a couple of days while Aaron and I had a short vacation in the finger lakes region of New York. We went to a number of state parks in the Ithaca area, and a bunch of wineries. Mmmmm. Ceci had a great time while in Ohio -- she's still talking about the Cincinnati zoo and riding Papa's tractor.
More recently, I was in Vancouver for a teaching workshop, and that was a good trip as well. The workshop, while very good, was a significant time commitment (kind of difficult when you're someplace as beautiful as Vancouver). I still had enough time in the evening to run in Stanley Park and see some sights around the shoreline. Unfortunately, I really torqued one of my ankles while I was there, and then made it worse upon returning to Lawrence and running some more... subsequently putting my knees through the wringer as well. So, this week's excitement was a trip to the orthopedic doctor. No running for me for a while, and it looks like I get my first crack at some physical therapy. Stupid, stupid Caroline.
It has been brutally hot for the last couple of days; 100 deg. + some. We put the sprinkler out in the front yard yesterday afternoon and let Ceci run through it with her clothes on. We looked like complete 'necks, but she had a great time. Both Aaron and I have acclimated to the Kansas summers pretty well... it only took us almost 6 years, but we've both been a lot better about shrugging off the intense heat and humidity and getting outside in July/August weather. I've actually come to really enjoy the hottest days of summer. Don't get me wrong, I really dig having A/C to crawl back to, but I will take a 100 degree day in July over a 35 degree and sleeting day in January -- anytime. Sometimes, I crave that oppressive Kansas summer heat when it's 60 and blue skies in October. Something about it has grown on me.

Lazy Sunday morning
Things have been going smoothly lately... we're well settled into the post-Christmas, spring semester normal routine, and our biggest challenge has seemed to be surviving the crazy winter we're having in Lawrence. We're seeing more snow this year than we have since moving here 5 years ago -- which is fun, but also a complete schedule-destroyer. It has also been brutally cold this year. We've had two or three mornings this month in which the actual mercury reading was -12 or -13F. That's a COLD kind of cold. Despite the freezing temps, Ceci has had fun exploring and trying new things this season: sledding, building snowmen, throwing snowballs, and yes, eating lots of snow.
Ceci seems to be getting bigger by the day. Aaron and I were looking at photos from Christmas this morning, and we both immediately realized that she is already noticeably older looking than she was two months ago. It's amazing to me how quickly she's learning and growing... a month ago, she couldn't count at all, and today, she's counting to ten on her own. She's very into "imaginative" play these days, too, and it it SO fun watching her pretend to be a puppy, a mommy, a fairy, an airplane, and a chicken all in a 15 minute period. :-) She is truly full of joy, thoughts, and curiosity these days!
